About the Bible of Matilda Jane Banks and Anthony Bledsoe Henderson

The original Bible is about 5" x 7" and bears no publication date. The first few pages have come loose from the binding and the publisher's page may be lost. Matilda hand wrote her name in pencil twice in the inside cover.

"160,000 published" is printed on an inside page, along with a rubber stamp that says "Robert Watson." The Bible has a hard cover that is faded red with a black design. On the bottom of the front cover is printed "American Bible Society." There may have been more information on the spine, but that part of the cover is missing.

Details of the Handwritten Entries

Page 1- "Marriages" lists the marriage of Anthony and Matilda in Matilda's handwriting.

Page 2 - "Births" lists the births of Anthony and Matilda's 11 children in Matilda's handwriting.

Page 3 - "Deaths".  The death records appear to have been written by my Grandmother, Mollie Henderson.  The very last entry in pencil, "Mary M. Henderson Booze Feb. 25, '68" was written by my Mother, Bertha (Booze) Gibson.

How I Came to Posses the Bible

Matilda and Anthony were the parents of my grandmother, Mary Matilda (called Mollie) Henderson.  She married Edward Riley Booze, Sr.  Matilda and Anthony were living in Ed and Mollie's home when they died and that's probably how my grandmother came to possess the family Bible.  She passed it to my Mother, Bertha (Booze) Gibson, who passed it to me.  I will pass it to my daughter, Linda Schaefer.

I'm Carolyn Gibson Tebeau and I have had the Bible for about 15 years and always wanted to share it with Anthony and Matilda's many descendants. But it's so old and fragile I didn't dare take it out to be photocopied and kept it locked in a trunk all these years, taking it out only for family members to see.

Now that I have a scanner I can copy the Bible in my home and am grateful to Rick for creating this private, virtual, place where the rest of the family can share this wonderful treasure.
